CHAPTER SEVEN

The din of the Smokehouse Restaurant made it hard to hear each other. Joey and I had gotten together a couple of times since I’d returned to town. I really enjoyed reconnecting with my sister. She always had a lot going on with her family. I was happy I could give her a breather once in a while. The place was hopping with the talk of the pet parade we had seen earlier that day. The joy of the kids and pets warmed the heart of even the most callous person.

“This is nice, getting some one-on-one time with my big sis,” Joey said. For the longest time, I hated that reference. I was only the oldest by a few minutes of us triplets and somehow that put me in charge of the kids at home when Mom had to work. Now, I was happy to own it and help out in any way I could.

“It’s crazy busy in here. We could have come another time so you could have worked and earned the tips.”

Joey smiled warmly. “Nah, this is way better than any money. Wasn’t that parade adorable? It gets better every year. It’s one of the reasons I love this place.”

I sipped my coffee. “Each float was cuter than the last. I might even enter Max and Trixie next year.” I took another sip of my coffee.

“What? Does that mean you’ve decided to move back?” Joey almost squealed and bounced in her seat.

We placed the menus on the end of our table to signal to the waitress we were ready to order. “I’m seriously thinking about it. Now that I’ve moved from Mom’s to the hotel, it’s given me the separation to keep my sanity.”

Joey gave a little finger wiggle to someone entering the restaurant. I looked out the corner of my eye to see Wyatt come through the door. He smiled big at her. I looked back at Joey, sure she blushed. She bowed her head and busied her hands with the napkin. “I would love it so much if you moved back. I don’t get to see Zoe much, and I could really use a sister more prominently in my life.” She kept her head down.

I had a giant grin on my face. It was clear that there was a spark between Joey and Wyatt. “I agree. And working on fixing up the hotel with Mom has been a blessing for me too. It’s bringing back good memories of the projects Frank and I did together before he passed. I loved admiring the results when we had finished.”

Joey lifted her head. She giggled, while continuing to fidget with the napkin. The waitress came and took our orders, giving Joey a reprieve from my quizzing. I took another sip of my coffee and slowly set the cup down. I folded my hands on the table.

“OK, so yes, I like Wyatt. There, I said it.”

I held up my hand. “It’s none of my business. But, how did you two meet?”

Joey snuck a peak at Wyatt across the room.
